The Sussex Eye Foundation

In 1832, Dr James Pickford had the vision of establishing the predecessor of the Sussex Eye Hospital.

The current building at Eastern Road, built in the 1930s, is the fourth home of the Hospital. It provides world class eye care not just to Sussex folks with eye problems, but also to patients from the entire UK and worldwide for very specialist treatment. The Sussex Eye Hospital, a teaching hospital of the Brighton and Sussex Medical School and of the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, also carries out ophthalmic research, in addition to training the next generation of consultant eye surgeons.

180 years on, the Sussex Eye Foundation is being formed to advance ophthalmology and the provision of eye care in Sussex, notably through supporting the endeavours of the Sussex Eye Hospital. This will range from purchasing state of the art medical equipment and instruments and funding research studentships, to refurbishing buildings and even planning the provision of a new building in years to come.

The Foundation will also support sharing our advanced eye care knowledge and experience with developing countries, especially Africa.

Our upcoming Charity Dinner will be held at The Royal Pavilion in Brighton on the 25th March, in aid of the Sussex Eye Foundation. Tickets are £120 and the event begins at 7:00pm. To book your place, call Miss Awa Sanago on 01273 552305.
